  1.                      TRANSFERABLE  SKILLS
  2.
  3. People used to look at jobs as lifetime commitments and identified
  4. closely with their particular job.  For many, this way of looking at
  5. themselves is no longer useful.  Now, it's important to view
  6. yourself in a "skill capacity" manner.  Rather than saying "I'm a
  7. line supervisor for the phone company." it is better to say "I'm a
  8. person with ____ skills that can be used by IBM, General Motors, a
  9. machine shop, etc."
  10.
  11. By thinking of yourself as a person with skills rather than as a
  12. person with a particular job title, you can break out of the little
  13. box that you, and others, may have put you in.  Changing the way
  14. you see yourself can open new doors for you in your job search.
  15.
  16. For many people, taking this new look at themselves is hard.  To
  17. assist you in recognizing the skills that you actually have, the
  18. "Transferable Skill Analysis" form is provided.  Under "work
  19. achievements" list all your work experience, your volunteer
  20. experience, your work at home experience, and your hobbies.  Then,
  21. under "things you know" list the corresponding skills.
  22.
  23. The "things you know" should actually be looked at from three
  24. separate perspectives.
  25. 1. Think about what you did with things.
  26. 2. Think about what you did with people.
  27. 3. Think about what you did with information.
  28.
  29.        Example:      Line Supervisor
  30.
  31. 1.  Things:       Sorted requests, ordered parts, maintained job
  32.                   lists.
  33.
  34. 2.  People:       Gave instructions, helped crew, instructed crew,
  35.                   supervised work quality.
  36.
  37. 3.  Information:  Interpreted directions, organized instructions,
  38.                   kept records, memorized information quickly.
  39.
  40.
  41. To further help you get started, a few suggested skills are
  42. provided in the following lists.
